Scotland The Brave – all things Scottish

Scottish weather – a cause of depression and drink/drug abuse?

Weather for May is just abismal.  Wet, cold wind (about 12C) and just fecking awful…the grey skies are sickenenly depressing.

Is this the route of all the alcohol and drug abuse we hear about?  Actually, I would focus more on alcohol abuse….that is an acceptable Scottish form of relaxation, drinking 12 pints or 1/2 a bottle of whisky.  Let me retract that – most people drink beer or wine (Buckfast).  Would better weather mean less of this behaviour?  I say maybe not, as when it’s a sunny day the cash register at the ‘offy’ rings continously.  And people make a point of going out at night, only to…ahem consume lots of alcohol.

Having just been in Singapore where alcohol cannot be found outside of the 7-11 or restaurant, things are much different.  No litter, no drunks, no druggies and low crime.  Everyone seems content and they spend their time shopping, eating and going to the cinema (where it costs 2 quid to see a movie).

So my point is this, maybe it’s the alcohol that’s the cause of depression in Scotland, not the weather.

Scotland portrayed properly on Canadian travel programme

Was watching a Canadian travel program – it got Scotland to a tee…..it was raining when they filmed which was funny.  They also pointed out the difference between Scotland and England which was accurate also.

Visiting Edinburgh castle, interviewing a piper about his sporan and what he kept under his hat, the gun at Edinburgh castle – very accurate.  Also some better known pubs in Edinburgh.

Good to see some people can get it right from the tourists point of view!
